About the Position

Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking experienced Shipyard Painters for opportunities with a leading shipbuilding and industrial client in Norfolk, Virginia.

We are looking for dependable, safety-focused painters with experience in industrial painting, surface preparation, spray painting, brush and roller application, sandblasting, and protective coatings. Shipyard or marine painting experience is highly preferred.

This is a hands-on position working in an industrial/shipyard environment and may involve working aboard vessels, in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Prepare steel, metal, fiberglass, and other surfaces for coating.
• Remove existing coatings, rust, scale, dirt, grease, and other contaminants.
• Perform surface preparation using hand tools and power tools.
• Operate industrial painting and coating equipment.
• Apply primers, sealers, intermediate coats, and finish coatings according to specifications.
• Apply coatings using brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and airless sprayers.
• Perform touch-up and repair work as required.
• Sand, grind, blast, and clean surfaces to achieve required finishes.
• Mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer and job specifications.
• Inspect completed work for coverage, defects, and quality.
• Maintain proper housekeeping in the work area.
• Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and environmental regulations.
• Work safely around other trades and shipyard operations.
• Perform work in confined spaces, tanks, elevated areas, scaffolding, and other shipboard locations when required.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in industrial, commercial, marine, or shipyard painting.
• Experience with surface preparation and coating application.
• Knowledge of industrial painting equipment and tools.
• Ability to properly use respirators and other required PPE.
• Ability to work safely at heights and in confined spaces.
• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment as required.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Reliable attendance and transportation.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
