About the Position

Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking Insulation Mechanics – J1 through J4 for opportunities with a leading shipbuilding and marine industrial client in Norfolk, Virginia.

We are looking for dependable, safety-conscious candidates with experience in marine insulation, shipboard lagging, pipe insulation, ventilation systems, or mechanical insulation. Candidates with shipyard experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

These positions offer opportunities for candidates at multiple skill levels, from entry-level Journeyman 1 through experienced Journeyman 4 mechanics.

Responsibilities

Depending on experience and journeyman level, responsibilities may include:

  • Install insulation and lagging materials aboard ships and marine vessels.
  • Read and interpret insulation drawings and work instructions.
  • Navigate vessels and identify ship compartments and work locations.
  • Measure, lay out, cut, fabricate, and install insulation materials.
  • Install fiberglass cloth, hull board, sheet rubber, tube rubber, and fiberglass pipe covering.
  • Install insulation on piping, ventilation ducting, valves, flanges, and engine systems.
  • Install lagging pads on pipe flanges, valves, ventilation systems, and engine exhaust systems.
  • Lay out and install overhead and bulkhead insulation structures.
  • Install waffle-back studs and related insulation supports.
  • Fabricate and install box beams and insulation wraps.
  • Fabricate and install lagging pads and miters as required.
  • Work with calcium silicate insulation on steam systems.
  • Apply finishing cement to calcium silicate seams.
  • Properly identify and select materials required for each job.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all shipyard safety procedures and PPE requirements.

Journeyman 1 – Entry Level

Candidates should be able to:

  • Read and use a tape measure.
  • Identify ship compartments and navigate vessels.
  • Use basic insulation tools such as knives, scissors, wire-twist pliers, hog-ring pliers, and snips.
  • Assist with overhead and bulkhead layout.
  • Assist with installation of pipe insulation and fiberglass materials.
  • Install fiberglass cloth on piping, ventilation ducting, and engine systems.
  • Install hull board and tape seams.
  • Fabricate and install basic insulation wraps and box beams.
  • Follow instructions and perform work safely.

Journeyman 2

In addition to J1 responsibilities, candidates should have experience with:

  • Laying out overhead and bulkhead structures.
  • Installing 1" and 2" waffle-back studs.
  • Installing sheet rubber, tube rubber, and fiberglass pipe covering.
  • Assisting with calcium silicate steam-system installation.
  • Applying finishing cement.
  • Identifying and selecting the correct insulation materials.

Journeyman 3

In addition to J2 responsibilities, candidates should have experience with:

  • Reading and interpreting insulation drawings with limited supervision.
  • Installing lagging pads on piping, valves, ventilation systems, and engine exhaust systems.
  • Assisting with fabrication of lagging pads and calcium silicate miters.
  • Installing calcium silicate insulation on various steam systems.
  • Applying finishing cement to insulation seams.
  • Knowledge of applicable shipboard insulation standards.

Journeyman 4

Experienced candidates should be able to:

  • Independently read and interpret insulation drawings.
  • Lay out and install insulation systems.
  • Design and fabricate lagging pads.
  • Install lagging pads on pipe flanges, valves, ventilation systems, and engine exhaust systems.
  • Fabricate calcium silicate miters.
  • Install calcium silicate and fabricated miters correctly.
  • Complete assignments with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • Previous insulation, lagging, mechanical, construction, or shipyard experience preferred.
  • Ability to work aboard vessels and in tight or confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in various shipboard locations.
  • Ability to use hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic measurements.
  • Ability to follow drawings, instructions, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to wear required PPE.
  • Reliable attendance and transportation.
  • Must be able to obtain required DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
  • Must be willing to work either listed shift as required.

Physical Requirements

This is a physically demanding shipyard position. Candidates must be comfortable with:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Climbing ladders and working aboard vessels.
  • Bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and working in confined spaces.
  • Handling insulation materials and tools.
  • Working in varying temperatures and industrial conditions.
  • Wearing respiratory protection and other required PPE when applicable.
