Sheet Metal Mechanic – J1–J4

Nationwide Skilled Trades | Norfolk, VA

Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking experienced Sheet Metal Mechanics (J1–J4) for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA. This is an excellent opportunity for skilled tradespeople with shipboard sheet metal, HVAC, habitability, and fabrication experience.

Position Details

  • Location: Norfolk, VA
  • Shift Options:
    • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:45 PM
    • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • Schedule: Monday–Sunday, based on project needs

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, install, repair, and assemble sheet metal components aboard Navy vessels.
  • Assemble ventilation runs according to drawings, specifications, and shipboard standards.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and shipboard specifications.
  • Perform sheet metal layout, fabrication, fitting, and installation.
  • Work with HVAC systems, ventilation, habitability components, and metal joiner systems.
  • Install and work with MJ bulkheads, doors, berths, galleys, office outfitting, and related shipboard components.
  • Operate sheet metal fabrication equipment including press brakes, hand brakes, power rollers, and hand rollers.
  • Perform work safely in tanks, compartments, confined spaces, and other shipboard environments.
  • Complete WAFs and hot work tickets as required by trade level.
  • Perform trade quality assurance and ensure work meets applicable specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow all shipyard safety requirements.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision at higher journeyman levels.

Qualifications

J1–J4 candidates are encouraged to apply.

Depending on journeyman level, candidates should have experience with:

  • Shipboard sheet metal fabrication and installation
  • HVAC and ventilation systems
  • Habitability installation
  • Mechanical drawings and blueprints
  • Sheet metal layout and fabrication
  • Press brake, hand brake, and roller operation
  • Navy ship nomenclature and compartment navigation
  • WAFs and hot work permits
  • Shipyard safety procedures and PPE

J4-level candidates should generally have extensive shipyard experience, including approximately 5+ years working aboard Navy ships, strong sheet metal fabrication/install capabilities, habitability knowledge, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Work aboard Navy vessels and navigate shipboard compartments
  • Climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces
  • Stand and walk for extended periods
  • Lift and carry tools/materials up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Bend, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl, push, pull, and reach
  • Wear required PPE and work in varying temperatures and industrial environments

Required/Preferred

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access
  • Reliable transportation
  • Shipyard experience strongly preferred
  • Navy ship experience preferred for higher journeyman levels
  • Must be available for evening/weekend work as required
