Maintenance Mechanic – J1–J4

Nationwide Skilled Trades | Norfolk, VA

Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking experienced Maintenance Mechanics (J1–J4) for an industrial facilities maintenance opportunity in Norfolk, VA. We are looking for dependable, safety-focused mechanics with commercial or industrial maintenance experience who can troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machinery, equipment, and facility systems.

Position Details

  • Location: Norfolk, VA
  • Positions: Maintenance Mechanic J1–J4
  • Shift: All shifts available
  • Security Clearance: Not required
  • Employment: Industrial/shipyard facilities environment

Responsibilities

Depending on experience and journeyman level, responsibilities may include:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on machinery and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical and equipment problems and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on facility and building systems.
  • Interpret diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, manufacturer specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform corrective maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, operating logs, and required documentation.
  • Assist with general building and facility maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate maintenance work with operations and other personnel.
  • Follow established safety procedures, equipment guarding requirements, and housekeeping standards.
  • Support and assist less-experienced mechanics when appropriate.

Journeyman Levels

J1 – Entry/Developing

  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and repair tasks under supervision.
  • Assist with equipment inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  • Use basic hand and power tools safely.
  • Follow maintenance instructions and technical documentation.
  • Develop the skills necessary to progress to J2.

J2 – Intermediate

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and repairs with some supervision.
  • Identify common equipment problems and perform routine repairs within demonstrated skill level.
  • Use maintenance diagrams, manuals, measuring instruments, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Perform general building and facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Demonstrate increasing technical proficiency and ability to progress to J3.

J3 – Experienced

  • Independently perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repairs.
  • Interpret diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Diagnose mechanical equipment problems and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Proficiently use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and shop equipment.
  • Perform general building and facility maintenance.
  • Complete required maintenance records and documentation.
  • Coordinate routine maintenance work with operations and other personnel.

J4 – Senior

  • Independently perform complex preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of machinery, equipment, and facility systems.
  • Determine repair requirements using diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, manufacturer specifications, equipment condition, and diagnostic findings.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and equipment problems.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with applicable tools, measuring instruments, and shop equipment.
  • Perform a broad range of building and facility maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ensure maintenance documentation and records are accurately completed.
  • Assist less-experienced Maintenance Mechanics with technical work and proper maintenance practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Commercial or industrial maintenance experience is required.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documentation, diagrams, or equipment manuals.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Shipyard experience strongly preferred.
  • Navy ship experience preferred for higher journeyman levels.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend work as required.
  • Must be able to work aboard vessels and in an industrial shipyard environment when required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required site access credentials and safety qualifications.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Lift and carry tools and equipment.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Climb ladders and work at elevated locations.
  • Crawl, kneel, crouch, stoop, bend, reach, push, and pull.
  • Work around industrial machinery and facility equipment.
  • Perform skilled mechanical tasks requiring good hand/eye coordination and visual acuity.
  • Wear required PPE and follow all applicable safety procedures.

Shipyard experience is helpful but is not required — commercial/industrial maintenance experience is the key requirement.
