Temporary Services Mechanic J1–J4 – 2nd Shift

Nationwide Skilled Trades is currently seeking Temporary Services Mechanics – J1 through J4 for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced shipyard mechanics and skilled tradespeople looking to work in a professional marine environment supporting ship construction, repair, maintenance, and temporary shipboard services.

Position Details

• Position: Temporary Services Mechanic J1–J4
• Location: Norfolk, VA
• Shift: 2nd Shift
• Schedule: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
• Employment Type: Temporary/contract opportunity

Responsibilities

Depending on journeyman level, responsibilities may include:

• Routing and installing hoses, lines, and leads aboard vessels
• Inspecting hoses, ventilation ducting, blowers, air manifolds, electrical disconnects, spider boxes, and cables
• Installing and maintaining freeze protection and backflow prevention systems
• Installing rat guards on lines and hoses 1½" and larger
• Setting up and performing hydrostatic tests on fire and potable water hoses
• Installing and connecting air dryers
• Inspecting, repairing, and testing air and water manifolds
• Installing quick disconnects near hull penetrations
• Setting up and maintaining temporary fire stations
• Installing and maintaining temporary shipboard services
• Placing and connecting temporary water coolers aboard ships
• Supporting rental equipment such as air compressors and generators
• Inspecting and maintaining berms for rental equipment
• Safely starting, stopping, and servicing compressors and generators
• Assisting with fuel-cell movement and equipment refueling
• Performing shipboard inspections and ensuring temporary services meet applicable requirements
• Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area

J1-Level Candidates

J1 candidates should have a basic understanding of shipboard work and be able to:

• Read basic ship layout drawings
• Understand ship nomenclature, compartment identification, and vessel navigation
• Use common hand tools safely
• Assist with routing hoses, lines, and leads
• Assist with inspections of temporary services equipment
• Understand basic ship systems layout
• Assist with protecting ship structures and equipment
• Perform work safely while following established procedures
• Work effectively with other trades and supervisors

J2–J4 Candidates

Higher-level mechanics should be capable of progressively more independent work, including:

• Installing and maintaining temporary shipboard services with minimal supervision
• Performing inspections and troubleshooting
• Setting up and testing temporary systems
• Repairing temporary fire stations
• Inspecting and testing air/water manifolds
• Installing freeze protection and backflow preventers
• Setting up hydrostatic tests
• Performing daily inspections of temporary services
• Planning and organizing work independently
• At the J4 level, overseeing a small crew and handling problems without direct supervision

Required Qualifications

• Shipyard or marine experience preferred
• Ability to work aboard Navy/commercial vessels
• Understanding of shipboard terminology and compartment locations
• Ability to work in confined spaces and around shipboard equipment
• Ability to use basic hand and power tools safely
• Ability to read basic drawings and ship layouts
• Ability to follow safety procedures and PPE requirements
• WAF training required
• Forklift certification required for applicable duties
• Ability to read and write effectively in English
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Required Site Access

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access/badges as required for shipyard work.

Candidates must also be able to meet applicable shipyard safety and access requirements.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

• Work aboard vessels
• Climb ladders and access elevated areas
• Work in confined spaces
• Stand and walk for extended periods
• Bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach
• Lift and carry tools and equipment
• Work around machinery, hoses, cables, and temporary services equipment
• Wear required PPE
• Work in varying temperatures and industrial environments
• Work evenings and occasional weekends as required
