Temporary Services Electrician J1–J4 – 2nd Shift

Nationwide Skilled Trades is currently seeking Temporary Services Electricians – J1 through J4 for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA.

This is an excellent opportunity for qualified electricians with marine, shipyard, industrial, or temporary services experience to support ship construction, repair, maintenance, and shipboard operations.

• Schedule: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Responsibilities

Depending on journeyman level, responsibilities may include:

• Installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting temporary electrical services aboard ships and on piers
• Installing temporary electrical equipment, cabling, generators, and power modules
• Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and drawings
• Laying out temporary electrical systems and selecting appropriate wire and breaker sizes
• Troubleshooting electrical equipment and circuits
• Using electrical test equipment such as VOMs, Meggers, amp meters, and phase rotation meters
• Performing electrical testing, circuit analysis, and troubleshooting
• Building and maintaining temporary service electrical equipment
• Assisting with setup and maintenance of temporary electrical generators and power modules
• Identifying electrical defects and assisting with corrective actions
• Inspecting temporary electrical installations for proper workmanship and safety
• Supporting shipboard electrical services in tanks, voids, cofferdams, piers, and elevated locations
• Maintaining tools and equipment in safe working condition
• Completing required documentation and reports at higher journeyman levels
• Following applicable shipyard, OSHA, NAVSEA, and safety requirements

J1-Level Candidates

J1 candidates should be able to:

• Identify electrical and workplace safety hazards
• Understand basic electrical safety practices
• Read and understand a Marine Chemist Certificate
• Follow instructions from supervisors and lead electricians
• Navigate vessels and understand ship compartment designations
• Assist with installation of temporary electrical services
• Use appropriate wire and breaker sizes under supervision
• Work safely in tanks, voids, cofferdams, elevated areas, and other shipboard locations
• Maintain and properly use electrical tools and equipment
• Keep work areas clean and safe
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers

J2–J4 Candidates

Higher-level electricians should demonstrate progressively greater independence and technical proficiency, including:

• Reading and interpreting electrical schematics
• Installing and laying out temporary electrical equipment and cabling
• Troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment
• Using electrical test equipment for testing and circuit analysis
• Setting up temporary electrical generators and power modules
• Understanding applicable NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA requirements
• Understanding ship compartment layouts and navigating vessels
• Identifying workmanship defects and determining corrective actions
• Working with minimal supervision
• Guiding and training junior electricians

J4-level candidates should additionally be capable of planning and prioritizing work, overseeing a small team, conducting advanced training, preparing required reports and Condition Found Reports, and independently troubleshooting temporary electrical equipment to the component level.

Required Qualifications

• Electrical experience required for the applicable journeyman level
• Shipyard/marine experience strongly preferred
• Understanding of electrical safety and safe work practices
• Ability to read electrical schematics at the appropriate journeyman level
• Ability to work aboard ships and on piers
• Ability to work in confined spaces, tanks, voids, cofferdams, and elevated locations
• Ability to use basic electrical and hand tools
• Current WAF training required
• Ability to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA badges/access
• Knowledge of applicable OSHA and NAVSEA requirements preferred
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as required
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English

Certifications & Training

Candidates with the following are encouraged to apply:

• NAVSEA-related training
• Marine electrical experience
• Experience with electrical testing equipment
• Forklift/JLG or other equipment certifications, where applicable

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

• Work aboard vessels and navigate shipboard environments
• Climb ladders and work at heights
• Work in confined spaces, tanks, voids, and cofferdams
• Stand and walk for extended periods
• Bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, push, and pull
• Lift and carry tools and equipment up to approximately 50 lbs.
• Wear required PPE
• Work around electrical equipment, machinery, cables, fumes, dust, and varying temperatures
• Maintain visual and manual dexterity necessary for electrical work

Site Access Requirements

Candidates must have or be able to obtain DBIDS and NAVSEA access/badges.

Candidates must also be able to meet applicable shipyard safety, security, and access requirements.
