Nationwide Skilled Trades is hiring experienced Outside Machinists for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA!

We are seeking skilled Outside Machinists J1–J4 with shipyard experience to perform machinery installation, overhaul, repair, alignment, troubleshooting, and testing aboard vessels.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced marine machinists looking for steady shipyard work with opportunities available across multiple journeyman levels.

Responsibilities

• Perform machinery overhaul, installation, repair, and testing aboard vessels.
• Work on equipment including:
  • Winches
  • Anchor windlasses
  • Steering gear
  • Air compressors
  • Pumps and motors
  • Valves
  • Diesel engines
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Reduction gears
  • Generators
  • Boat davits
  • Bearings
  • Cranes and brakes
  • Gas turbines
  • Louvers and aircraft elevators
• Perform pump and motor alignment.
• Perform shafting repairs and alignment.
• Remove and install propellers and rudders.
• Perform hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs.
• Read and utilize technical manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
• Use precision measuring equipment and mechanical hand/power tools.
• Complete repairs and installations while maintaining safety, quality, and productivity standards.
• Follow WAF requirements and applicable shipyard safety procedures.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area.

Journeyman Levels

J1 – Outside Machinist

• Minimum 2 years of directly related shipyard experience.
• Able to perform assigned machinery work under close supervision.

J2 – Outside Machinist

• Minimum 3 years of directly related shipyard experience.
• Meets J1 requirements and demonstrates increasing independence and technical proficiency.

J3 – Outside Machinist

• Minimum 4 years of directly related shipyard experience.
• Able to read and use technical manuals, blueprints, and specification items.
• Experienced with precision measuring instruments.

J4 – Outside Machinist

• Minimum 5 years of directly related shipyard experience.
• Meets J3 requirements.
• Able to determine equipment sizes and clearances and provide recommendations to supervision.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of directly related shipyard experience for J1; higher journeyman levels require additional experience.
• Experience with marine machinery repair, installation, overhaul, or testing.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and shop equipment.
• Ability to work aboard vessels and in confined/tight spaces.
• Ability to read technical documentation and blueprints appropriate to journeyman level.
• Ability to lift/carry tools and materials up to approximately 50 lbs.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access.
• Reliable transportation.
• Must be able to work occasional weekends and extended hours as required.
• May require up to 30% travel.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to:

• Climb ladders and work aboard vessels
• Stand and walk for extended periods
• Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, kneel, crouch, and stoop
• Work at heights and in confined spaces
• Work around machinery, tools, fumes, dust, noise, and varying temperatures
• Wear required PPE
