Schedule: 6:00 AM – 2:45 PM or 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Journeyman Levels: J1–J4

Nationwide Skilled Trades is hiring Pipe Welders for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA!

We are seeking experienced Pipe Welders J1–J4 to perform pipe and plate welding aboard ships and in shipyard facilities. Candidates should have experience with SMAW (stick) and/or GTAW (TIG) and be comfortable working with various metals and pipe configurations.

Responsibilities

• Weld pipe and plate using TIG and/or stick welding processes.
• Weld various joint configurations, including:
  • Butt joints
  • Socket joints
  • Backing rings
  • Open-butt joints
  • E.B. rings
• Work with materials including:
  • Carbon steel
  • Chrome-moly
  • Stainless steel
  • Copper-nickel (CuNi)
  • Monel
  • Aluminum
• Set up and operate welding equipment.
• Troubleshoot welding machines and TIG lines.
• Work with welding banks.
• Follow applicable welding procedures, specifications, and safety requirements.
• Perform quality work while meeting shipyard production requirements.
• Work aboard vessels and in confined or difficult-to-access areas as required.

Journeyman Levels

Pipe Welder J1

• Ability to stick weld fillet and butt joints.
• Willingness to learn additional welding procedures.
• Must be able to pass a 6G carbon steel pipe welding test.
• Must be able to obtain DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.

Pipe Welder J2

• Some knowledge of proper weld joint designs.
• Ability to stick weld and willingness to learn TIG.
• Experience with various metals is helpful.
• Ability to work with welding banks.

Pipe Welder J3

• Knowledge of proper weld joint designs.
• Ability to TIG and stick weld different materials.
• Experience welding pipe and plate, including butt joints, sockets, and backing rings.
• Experience with carbon steel/chrome-moly, CuNi, and stainless steel.
• Able to operate welding banks.
• Knowledge of welding machines and TIG-line troubleshooting.

Pipe Welder J4

• Strong knowledge of shipyard welding standards and proper joint designs.
• Able to TIG and stick weld all required pipe and plate configurations.
• Experience with CuNi, Monel, stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and chrome-moly.
• Able to set up and operate welding equipment.
• Able to troubleshoot TIG lines and welding machines.
• Able to weld using a mag-base mirror for TIG and stick welding.
• Experience with applicable P-I piping procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Previous welding experience appropriate to the journeyman level.
• Ability to pass required welding tests.
• Experience with pipe welding strongly preferred.
• Ability to work safely in a shipyard environment.
• Ability to work aboard vessels and in confined spaces.
• Ability to wear required PPE.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access.
• Reliable transportation.
• Must be available for assigned shifts, including potential evening/weekend work as required.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to:

• Work aboard ships and in confined spaces.
• Climb ladders and access elevated work areas.
• Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods.
• Handle welding equipment and materials.
• Work around heat, fumes, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
• Wear appropriate respiratory and other PPE when required.
