Pipefitter J1–J4

Location: Norfolk, VA
Schedule: 6:00 AM – 2:45 PM or 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM
Employment Type: Full-Time
Journeyman Levels: J1–J4
Security Clearance: Not Required

Nationwide Skilled Trades is hiring Pipefitters for shipyard work in Norfolk, VA!

We are seeking skilled Pipefitters J1–J4 to perform piping installation, fabrication, testing, repair, and maintenance aboard vessels and in shipyard facilities.

Candidates with shipyard pipefitting experience, blueprint-reading skills, hot work experience, and knowledge of piping systems are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, templates, and piping drawings.
  • Install and repair piping systems aboard vessels.
  • Perform shop prefabrication of piping systems.
  • Layout, fit, and install piping and associated components.
  • Perform pipe bending manually or with machinery.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing of piping systems.
  • Install pipe hangers and supports according to applicable drawings.
  • Install mechanically attached fittings.
  • Thread piping and tap holes to proper sizes.
  • Prepare piping for welding using grinders and beveling equipment.
  • Install backing rings and E.B. rings.
  • Fit and install flanged joints using proper gaskets and fasteners.
  • Identify and work with various pipe and fitting materials.
  • Identify and work with various valve types.
  • Perform valve packing as required.
  • Follow piping system tag-out procedures.
  • Follow WAF and work authorization requirements.
  • Perform hot work safely and according to applicable procedures.
  • Perform hot-water flushing of brazed piping systems as required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.

Journeyman Levels

Pipefitter J1

  • Read and interpret simple blueprints.
  • Perform minor piping installations.
  • Understand piping system tag-out procedures.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing with approved procedures.
  • Thread pipe and tap holes.
  • Bevel pipe for welding/fitting.
  • Install pipe hangers.
  • Identify common piping and fittings.
  • Fit flanged joints.
  • Understand hot work procedures.

Pipefitter J2

  • Read blueprints and sketches and install most piping systems with some supervision.
  • Perform shop prefabrication.
  • Perform minor pipe bends using hand or crank-style equipment.
  • Work with P-1 piping systems.
  • Identify Level 1 systems.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing.
  • Install fittings, hangers, supports, valves, and flanged joints.
  • Perform pipe threading, tapping, and beveling.
  • Understand hot work requirements.

Pipefitter J3

  • Read and interpret blueprints/sketches and install piping with limited supervision.
  • Perform shop prefabrication using templates and ship checks.
  • Understand piping system tag-out procedures.
  • Perform manual or machine pipe bending.
  • Work with P-1 and Level 1 piping systems.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing.
  • Install fittings, pipe supports, valves, and flanged joints.
  • Work with various piping and fitting materials.
  • Perform brazing and hot-water flushing.

Pipefitter J4

  • Independently read and interpret blueprints/sketches and install shipboard piping systems.
  • Perform advanced shop prefabrication using drawings and ship checks.
  • Execute piping system tag-outs safely in accordance with WAF requirements.
  • Perform manual and machine pipe bending.
  • Work with P-1 and Level 1 piping systems.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing.
  • Install mechanically attached fittings and pipe supports.
  • Thread pipe and tap holes.
  • Prepare pipe for welding and install backing/E.B. rings.
  • Understand pipe and fitting materials and their proper applications.
  • Fit flanged joints and properly select gaskets and fasteners.
  • Perform sil-brazing, including applicable grades.
  • Perform hot-water flushing on sil-brazed piping systems.
  • Understand hot work and bolting requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous pipefitting experience appropriate to the journeyman level.
  • Basic ability to read a tape/ruler and perform measurements.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with ship design and layout.
  • Knowledge of pipe hangers and supports.
  • Basic knowledge of piping systems and testing.
  • Familiarity with WAFs/work authorization procedures.
  • Understanding of hot work and torch safety.
  • Familiarity with blanking and tagging procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS and NAVSEA access.
  • Must be available for weekend work and/or extended hours as required.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to:

  • Work aboard vessels and access all required work locations.
  • Climb ladders and work in elevated areas.
  • Work in confined and difficult-to-access spaces.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and reach.
  • Handle tools and piping materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work around heat, fumes, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Wear required PPE.
