PMQS – Project Quality Management Quality Services has a great opportunity for experienced Advanced Shipfitters (Multi-Pass Tack & Burn) in Newport News, Virginia.
Pay Rate: $45/hour
Per Diem: $120/day for qualified non-local candidates
Location: Newport News, VA
Position: Advanced Shipfitter – Multi-Pass Tack & Burn
Background Check & Hair Follicle Drug Test: Required
Required Experience
- Minimum 4 years of commercial and/or naval experience as a First Class Shipfitter
- Experience must be documented on an Advanced Shipfitter Summary Sheet prior to arrival
- Candidates who previously had access to Huntington Ingalls Shipyard must provide their previous dates of access and required identification information during the onboarding process
Required Skills
- Multi-Pass Tack Welding
- Oxygen/Propane Burning Torch
- Oxygen/Propane Heating Torch
- Ability to read and comprehend complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, weld symbols, material types, datum lines, and reference lines
- Ability to work with fractional dimensions and rulers
- Lay out piece parts for fabrication and assembly
- Assemble structural piece parts according to specifications
- Experience in physically demanding shipbuilding or steel fabrication environments
- Familiarity with OSHA shipbuilding regulations
- Experience using grinders and needle guns
- Air Carbon Arc Gouging
- Ability to use Work Packages and Drawings to plan and execute work
- Ability to use Molded Lines and Ship Reference Lines
- Experience erecting, setting, and making up complex-shaped shell plates
- Experience with decks, bulkheads, longitudinals, trunks, and related structural components
- Ability to install and replace hull inserts and penetrations
- Ability to install miscellaneous and complex foundations
Optional Skills
- Rigging / Material Handling
- Optical instrument experience, including Level and Transit
- Shipwright / Erect & Set experience
- Tank Testing
- Mobile equipment operation, including JLG and Scissor Lift
Tack Welding Qualification
All Advanced Shipfitters must pass a Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification Test upon reporting for their first day.
Testing includes:
- SMAW process
- Vertical Up (3F)
- Overhead (4F)
- Multi-Pass Tack Welding
- Visual Inspection of Weld Level I
Candidates must successfully pass the required Newport News Welding School testing before beginning work.
