ERSG is seeking a Sr. Power System Protection Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the electrical system is properly protected according to policies and good engineering practice. This position provides consulting services to other departments relating to system protection. This position in a more senior capacity also is responsible for system disturbance analysis and relay mis-operation analysis. Also responsible for ensuring adherence to FRCC/NERC standards regarding system protection.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Calculation or approval of all protective relay settings from the generation substations to the distribution busses. Perform equipment programming for substation automation projects and HMI implementations. Develop and implement the annual under frequency load shedding program. Calculate impedances for transmission lines and other system components. Assist in specifying positive and zero sequence impedances for new power transformers. Calculate interrupting duty on all circuit breakers and insure interrupting ratings are not exceeded
Analyze the performance of (high voltage) electrical facilities, including malfunctions or failure of equipment and make recommendations for remedial procedures. Design and maintain the digital fault recorder network as well as the automatic polling system for digital relays installed in transmission and distribution substations. Assist in selecting protective relay schemes to be used on the system. Review proposed construction projects and insure they may be protected properly. Help evaluate new protection products to determine if they are appropriate for the system. Perform fault studies for use by ED Engineering and Construction and other company departments.
Assisting Supervisor of Substation Relay and Control with troubleshooting of relay and control problems. Take part as on-call engineer (technical support) for troubleshooting system disturbances and relay/control problems as required. Provide technical support to the Relay Specialists in the area of relay testing and troubleshooting. Work in cooperation with the System Restoration Unit in the event of major storm damage. Maintain at all time awareness of safety in all aspects of substation engineering, construction and operations.
Provide technical support in analysis and understanding of distribution system protection and coordination as required by district and area engineering, customers and others. Provide protection related data for other divisions of the company, outside agencies, and Customers as required.
Department lead for NERC compliance issues. Ensure department compliance to NERC standards and readiness for NERC audits. Evaluate and comment on proposed new standards and changes to existing standards. Coordinate annually the FRCC under frequency load shedding program. Prepare clients submittal for FRCC’s annual short-circuit database.
