Please read this first...it's important:
***We prefer this individual be local to the Hickory, NC area however, we are flexible and will consider those who live outside this area (anywhere in the USA) who are highly skilled and experienced in Transmission/Substation and/or Power Collection project estimation.*** Note that if you live outside the Hickory, NC area, we would most likely need you to travel as needed for project estimations but the majority of the work you could do from your home/remote office.
The primary functions of this position are to provide and/or coordinate all aspects of high voltage transmission line estimating services for transmission project estimates.
Included but are not limited to:
Review transmission specifications, drawings, attend pre-bid meetings, etc. to accurately determine the full scope of work and required content of estimates.
Review plans and specifications for completeness, inconsistencies, and conflicts.
Review, identify and compile relevant historical transmission project data that subsequently can be used in the preparation of all estimates. This includes monitoring electrical projects to be aware of actual construction means, methods and costs factors.
Manage the transmission estimating process from beginning to end providing appropriate input and technical support. This includes bidding multiple projects simultaneously. This can include one to six (+) bids being created/built.
Ensure all transmission bid documents and data are downloaded, always updated and maintained including addendum to support assigned estimates. This will require knowledge of in-house Dropbox structure and the ability to locate the files needed for required information during a bidding process. Dropbox is an online “data repository” tool where we house data.
Conduct and/or manage the transmission project take-off and BOM development. This will require the estimator to be able to develop take-offs and a BOM from 10%, 30%, 60%, 90% design packages.
Communicate with transmission operations division to collect estimated manhours and equipment required for bid development.
Communicate with clients/engineers/architects, as required.
This includes all RFI processes for each client and each specific bid to follow correct documentation to gather the correct data for the bid.
Manage the vendor and supplier solicitation process to ensure appropriate scope and pricing is obtained and analyzed accordingly.
This includes but not limited to: subcontractors for multiple scopes not performed in house.
This includes but not limited to: suppliers/vendors for all aspects of material and equipment that is provided by Sentry for any given project. This includes but not limited to: tangent structures, pole top hardware, conductors, etc.
Estimator will develop and maintain all subcontractor and vendor relationships in combination with procurement and field operations.
Review all assumptions used in the transmission estimating process to ensure appropriateness with established Company estimating policies and procedures.
Review all aspects of the final estimates for accuracy and completeness prior to submission.
Perform transmission bid review with operational personnel to obtain operational buy in.
As required, prepare all transmission schedules necessary for bid preparation. This includes man power and resource scheduling within Microsoft Project.
Prepare value engineering and other cost saving initiatives, as appropriate.
Assist with all business development efforts including the preparation and presentation of estimates to potential clients. This includes completing follow up’s by phone and email with clients post bid to determine of how the bid is compared to the market.
Ensure the cost impacts of all applicable Company safety policies and procedures are incorporated into the preparation of every estimate.
Review client/subcontractor contracts prior to signing for any scope differences from what was bid. This includes schedule, scope of work and required subcontractor approval through client and Sentry pre-qualification.
Prepare detailed transmission cost budgets, as necessary, for successful estimates and participate in client negotiations when required.
Manage the preparation of all necessary documents needed for the project turnover process and attend scheduled meetings. Estimator is required to perform/lead a project hand-off meeting from estimating department to operations staff.
During transmission construction, prepare all required estimating data necessary for the preparation of change orders and other project documents.
Travel to jobs sites as needed for short or extended periods of time to 1) assist Project Managers and Superintendents and 2) gain additional knowledge on Sentry’s means and methods.
Have a complete working knowledge of the Company’s computerized estimating systems and ensure they are utilized appropriately at all times. This includes Microsoft Excel formula troubleshooting.
Have an understanding of all Company policies and procedures.
Prepare estimating reports, as necessary. Reports include but not limited to a complete data analysis of a project’s success as defined by management after the project has completed and/or during project buildout. This includes cost code comparison, material budget comparison, subcontractor budget comparison, change order analysis from the actual change in work expenses to revenue from change orders, etc.
The estimator will develop bids for multiple different HV electrical clientele including but not limited to: renewables, utility, co-op and is based on diverse geographic locations.
Estimator will develop/assist in developing bid strategy with the estimating team along with upper management.
Build and prepare client schedule of values along with proposals for each bid tailored to each client. This includes but not limited to: clarifications, multiple different SOV’s and proposals for the same project but to different clients.
Review and analyze different markets for the transmission division.
Continuously assesses and supports continuous improvement efforts including but not limited to: estimating templates, historical data organization, and department structure.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A minimum of a four-year construction management or engineering degree or equivalent is preferred as well as 3 years’ transmission estimating or design experience.
Transmission Line design/estimating experience.
Able to read and understand transmission drawings and develop bill of materials and schedule of values.
A demonstrated knowledge of electrical estimating techniques, engineering disciplines, and computer/cost control/budget systems is also necessary as well as the ability to interpret computerized cost data.
Must be able to prepare complex estimates with minimal supervision.
The position requires someone who is detailed oriented, analytical, organized, is able to meet established deadlines, has strong management and communication skills, and works well in pressure-type situations.
Transmission construction field experience is also preferred.
Must be fully proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook, Microsoft Project and Adobe.
Experience in full EPC projects
Experience from 69kV to 345kV
