Protection & Control Technician I (P&C Tech I)

Position Overview
The Protection & Control Technician I supports the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of protection and control systems used in power substations. This entry-level role is ideal for candidates with foundational electrical knowledge seeking hands-on experience in utility and substation environments.
The position requires strong technical aptitude, the ability to interpret electrical schematics, and a commitment to safety and operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Protection & Control Systems
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying systems
Install and program microprocessor relays and related control devices
Perform calibration and functional testing of protection relays
Support monitoring systems within substations
Field & Project Support
Assist assigned project leads with field assignments
Support development and maintenance of protection and control documentation
Maintain compliance with safety standards and operating procedures
Equipment & Systems Exposure
Work with equipment including:
Microprocessor relays
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
Sensors
Pumps and motors
AC and DC systems
Continuous Development
Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and best practices in protection and control
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field preferred
0–3 years of experience in controls technician or related role
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs
Experience with AC and DC systems
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Must live within reasonable commuting distance to assigned APC office location
