Pay- $45-$75 hour plus $110 day per diem/$770 weekly approximately $40k in per diem annually. Near Charleston
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Substation Relay Design Engineer to support the design, development, and implementation of electrical substation projects for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial systems. This position offers the opportunity to lead complex engineering projects, provide technical expertise, and contribute to the reliability and modernization of critical power infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in substation relay and protection design, grounding systems, RTU programming, and utility engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Project Leadership
Create engineering drawings and relay protection designs for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial substations
Prepare purchase requisitions and material requests for electrical substation equipment
Assist in preparing technical specifications to ensure equipment is manufactured and applied correctly
Perform grounding tests and support design calculations for new and existing ground grids
Develop RTU drawings, RTU programming, and EMS database sheets
Serve as project lead on assigned projects by:
Attending project meetings
Coordinating with internal teams and vendors
Monitoring schedules and ensuring projects meet in-service dates
Technical Responsibilities
Provide power system and protection engineering expertise to internal departments and utility partners
Support troubleshooting, system analysis, and engineering consulting activities
Coordinate with field personnel to improve understanding of substation equipment and operations
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Research and evaluate new technologies, materials, and engineering practices related to electrical substations
Identify opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
Support process improvement initiatives and engineering best practices
Standards & Compliance
Review and update engineering specifications, figures, and standard material catalogs
Participate in standards review meetings and collaborate with engineering team members
Interface with vendors regarding new technologies and equipment developments
Maintain accurate records and documentation within Oracle, iPort, and ECM systems
Ensure engineering drawings and documentation comply with company and industry standards
Leadership
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and coaching to engineers and technical personnel
Support collaboration across engineering, operations, and construction teams
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
Professional Engineer (PE) certification in the State of South Carolina required
Experience in substation relay and protection design
Knowledge of transmission, distribution, and industrial substation systems
Experience with RTU programming, EMS databases, and grounding design/testing
Strong understanding of utility engineering standards and project coordination
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Preferred Experience
Utility or power systems engineering experience
Experience with relay settings, SCADA, and substation automation systems
Familiarity with Oracle, iPort, and ECM documentation systems
Experience leading complex engineering projects
