Protection & Control Engineer

Location: Moncks Corner, SC
Employment Type: Direct Hire – Permanent Position

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Engineer to support electric transmission and substation projects. This is a direct-hire, permanent position offering a comprehensive benefits package, including Health, Vision, Dental, 401(k), and paid vacation.

The Protection & Control Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems that help ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electric grid.

The ideal candidate will have experience with protective relaying, substation protection and control systems, relay settings and coordination, and electrical drawings within a utility, consulting engineering, or power delivery environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review protection and control designs for transmission and distribution substations.
  • Perform protective relay settings, coordination, and engineering calculations.
  • Develop and review single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
  • Design protection schemes for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and other substation equipment.
  • Select and apply protective relays and associated equipment.
  • Support relay upgrades, replacements, and substation modernization projects.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinate with Substation Engineering, Transmission Planning, Operations, SCADA/Communications, and field personnel.
  • Provide engineering support during installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and energization.
  • Assist with the investigation and resolution of protection system and equipment issues.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable NERC, IEEE, NEC, and utility engineering standards and requirements.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and records.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Experience in Protection & Control, protective relaying, substation engineering, or power systems engineering.
  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution electrical systems and substation equipment.
  • Experience developing or reviewing relay settings and protection coordination studies.
  • Familiarity with protective relay manufacturers such as SEL, GE, Siemens, or ABB/Hitachi Energy preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and substation drawings.
  • Experience with utility or engineering consulting organizations is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Transmission-level substation Protection & Control experience.
  • SEL relay programming and settings experience.
  • Experience with SCADA, RTUs, communications, and substation automation.
  • Familiarity with applicable NERC reliability standards.
  • Experience supporting field testing and commissioning.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
