Job Summary

AECOM Global Oil & Gas is seeking a highly talented SmartPlant 3D Coordinator - Lead Piping Designer to work out of the New Orleans, Louisiana office.

Position Description or Typical Responsibilities:

This position involves the design and drafting of 3D CAD based mechanical and piping drawings for the energy, oil, gas and petrochemical industry projects. This position is contingent upon contract award with an anticipated hire date in August 2017.

Level Specific Responsibilities:

•Under minimal supervision, develops complex engineering drawings.

•Applies a solid level of understanding within a specific discipline.

•Exercises sound judgment in assessing problem situations or complex design issues, and uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.

•Basic understanding of engineer’s process of performing and verifying design calculations to support the overall project design.

•Fully understands the purpose and use of vendor documents, reviews them for accuracy and resolves discrepancies. Also reviews discipline supplier documents and other discipline’s supplier documents for accuracy.

•Fully understands the use of requisitions and the role of materials management and can review/advise on purchase orders and subcontracts.

•Understands and applies business development concepts and principles, financial terminology and measures, and provides support for proposals.

•Leads or Assists with the development of manpower, man-hour, and labor costs requirements for design staff and monitors data to aid in evaluating the budget.

•Intermediate knowledge of cost estimating methods and performs thorough and accurate material take-offs for the discipline.

•Intermediate knowledge of discipline’s materials costs and cost analysis and forecasting methods.

•Intermediate knowledge of the project change control process, rationale and requirement, and identifies potential changes.

•Full understanding of the discipline’s equipment and material lists and instructs others in their use and requirements. Prepares designs and drawings using project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.

•Provides technical guidance and assistance to Designers and Technicians.

•Reviews completed work with design and drafting personnel responsible for completion to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and design data.

•Advises the Design Supervisor or Supervising Design Engineer (SDE) about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays, and adverse problems.

•Understands and assists with the planning and scheduling of design tasks associated with assigned project.

•Assists in interpreting industry codes, permits, and standards, and ensures design and drawing compliance.

•Understands the role of each of the other disciplines in Engineering.

Minimum Requirements

•Minimum of an Associates degree or higher in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience.


•Minimum of eight (8) years of design experience with complex industrial piping plant design drawings.

•Proficiency in design of mechanical and piping drawings to include Orthographic (orthos), Isometric (isos) and Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID's).

•3 or more years of experience with SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID in a production environment

•Must have 2D annotation skills.

•Achieved SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID Super User, SME (Subject Matter Expert) or SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID Administrator experience status

•Familiar with all SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID discipline aspects and requirements

•Ability to Maintain, Test and Support an SmartPlant 3D and / or SPPID integrated environment

•Ability to configure, setup, test, and maintain all SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID libraries, PBS and production environment

•Experienced with SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID Piping Reference Data and Engineering Data Editor

•Proven performance record using SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID on previous project implementations

•Capable of Support and training project resources utilizing SmartPlant 3D and/or SPPID

•Must be able to travel to industrial field project location(s), as lead designer for field inspection(s), field sketches and verification of piping installations, which includes walking, climbing ladders, etc.

•Must possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)

•Due to the nature of the work, candidate must be a US Citizen

•Must be able to obtain Personal Identification Verification (PIV) which complies with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD‐12.)

Preferred Qualifications

•10 years of design experience with complex industrial piping plant design drawings.

•Previous experience with PDMS, AutoCAD Plant 3D or Bentley AutoPLANT

•Previous experience working on Oil & Gas, Power and/or Petrochemical industry projects

•Previous experience leading a team of piping designers & drafters

•Formally Trained by a Company or Accredited SmartPlant instructor

Additional Information:

•Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test

•Relocation and per diem support are not available for this position.
