[Utility Worker] Travel Directional Drill Operator / Underground Skilled Laborer

As a Traveling Subsurface Infrastructure Specialist, a role that offers an exciting blend of travel, hands-on work, and problem-solving. This position involves extensive travel, approximately 90% of the time, with several weeks on the road followed by up to a week at home, providing a unique balance between exploration and stability.

Primary Responsibilities:

As a key contributor, you will directly collaborate with the Project Coordinator or Site Manager, playing a vital role in our operations. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks focused on subsurface infrastructure development and maintenance. Key responsibilities include:

Site Preparation:

Organizing and preparing work sites, including strategic equipment placement and reel trailer arrangements.
Ensuring the smooth setup of equipment, such as directional drills and mini-excavators, for the placement of underground plant facilities.
Proficiency in techniques such as potholing to expose existing utilities and locating utility lines.

Infrastructure Placement and Installation:

Skilled operation of directional drills, mini-excavators, and other specialized machinery for precise underground infrastructure placement.
Comprehensive understanding of clearances required in relation to utilities, ground, roads, highways, sidewalks, and non-pedestrian areas.
Expertise in loading and unloading equipment and materials necessary for daily tasks.
Competence in the proper transportation, handling, and placement of conduits, both rolled and stick forms.
Proficient in transporting and handling fiber reels and installing fiber cables within conduits.
Ensuring proper setting and securing of pedestals and vaults for reliable infrastructure deployment.
Ability to interpret network prints and translate them into actionable installation steps.

Maintenance and Quality Assurance:

Contributing to the installation and maintenance of underground utilities, utilizing hand tools and mechanical equipment for tasks like hand digging.
Facilitating team preparedness for shifts, emphasizing punctuality and proper attire.
Collaborating with team members to enhance productivity, meeting or exceeding scheduling targets.

Operating and maneuvering around heavy equipment and machinery safely.
Adapting to work in congested or remote areas as required by project demands.
Learning and mastering new tasks under the guidance of Superintendents, Foremen, and colleagues.
Assisting in traffic control measures to ensure safety.

Safety and Compliance:

Upholding OSHA and company safety standards rigorously.
Ensuring the restoration of work sites to their original state after daily construction activities.
Conducting regular Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) or similar assessments on designated applications.


Job Requirements:

Proven experience in directional drill operations.
Minimum of a high school diploma or completion of Vocational School; college degree is advantageous.
Possession of a valid and current driver's license is mandatory.
A Class A CDL is preferred.
Successful completion of background checks and biannual motor vehicle record checks.
Familiarity with intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
A natural team player, capable of collaborating with field staff, project management, and internal company leadership.
Comfortable working at heights and over water.
Ability to maintain composure, focus, and effectiveness under pressure.
Self-driven with strong leadership skills, capable of goal-setting and task management.
Willingness to travel extensively and work at diverse job sites across the United States, accounting for approximately 95% of the year.
Regular practice of conducting daily JHA or similar hazard analyses on assigned tasks.
Adherence to the Drug-Free Workplace policy; candidates must pass pre-employment and randomized DOT-regulated drug tests.
1+ years of relevant experience or equivalent roles, with a background in Utility or Outside Plant work being a valuable asset.
Proficient knowledge of safety standards and commitment to their enforcement.
