The down stream technician assists the line operator. The extruder machine produces 90 feet of plastic drainage pipe every minute and it gets spun on a drum (looks like a big hay bailer). The bail is moving relatively fast so the DST candidate needs to be able to work in a fast pace environment. After the bail gets about half full, the DST candidate will start tying the piping up so it doesn't all unravel when its getting installed into the fields. This does take some time and the extruder machine does not stop so the pipe starts to look like "spaghetti noddles on the floor". A lot of people start to panic during this time but the best candidate will stay on task and continue to tie up the bail. Typically there are 2 DST's per line to help out in situations like this. Sometimes the tubing can get twisted into knots and it will need to be taken apart. After the bail has been fully assembled, the DST will do the final tie off and will rotated the bail so the forklift can come and grab it.
