JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner within a restricted environment. Heavy equipment may include front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, skid steers, graders, compactors, forklifts and other heavy pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must operate and maintain heavy motorized equipment used in earth moving in a safe and efficient manner and must be able to interact with the customer in a courteous and professional manner. This position requires the applicant to qualify as a Contamination Worker. A DOE security clearance is also required in order to access the site where this work is performed.

Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and/or abilities. To perform this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently. A Contamination Worker position typically involves but is not limited to the following:

•The satisfactory completion of training to qualify as a Contamination Worker. This training is comprised of written examinations and practical demonstrations that validate knowledge retention.
•The remediation, maintenance and demolition of historical radiological facilities.
•Construction and installation of radiological tents and work enclosures.
•The processing and packaging of radioactive and hazardous waste materials.

Essential Requirements/Skills:
•Ability to operate required motorized equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
•Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
•Good interpersonal skills.
•Ability to read and write to record and maintain daily records.
•Knowledge of truck and equipment safety.
•Knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, graders, and other pieces of heavy equipment.
•Ability to work flexible hours.

Preferred Requirements/Skills:
•Working knowledge of grade and blueprints.
•Working knowledge of OSHA excavation requirements.
•Operate heavy, motorized equipment used in earth moving operations, including but not limited to excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, forklifts, etc., and other heavy equipment to support a variety of operations.
•Be able to excavate a trench and maintain a required depth on various terrains and slopes.
•Gather and load dirt and waste from job sites onto trucks and transport to appropriate locations.
•Use mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
•Perform required manual labor in construction and maintenance projects.
•Checks and services assigned equipment.
•Perform routine maintenance.
•Report complex mechanical problems for shop repairs.
•May assist in loading and unloading of trucks.
•Work independently in absence of supervisor.
•Assist in other Contamination Worker duties as a qualified Contamination Worker when required.

•Assist in other Contamination Worker duties as a qualified Contamination Worker when required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
•High school diploma or GED.
•Minimum of ten (10) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance experience, including significant formal and practical experience with excavator operations. Prior operational experience with an excavator demo hammer and excavator hydraulic thumb is a plus.
•Expert proficiency in operating heavy power-driven equipment.
•Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
•Heavy Equipment Operators Journeyman certificate is desirable.
•Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
•Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and customers.
•Prior experience in a nuclear/DOE/restricted access environment would be an added plus

US Citizenship, with no dual citizenship is required for this position.

Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Position requires U.S. Citizenship with (no dual citizenship) ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance which involves an extensive criminal and financial background investigation and previous employment reference verifications.
