Junior Safety Professional

Project Background

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the cornerstone of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) nuclear waste cleanup effort. The WIPP is designed to permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste left from the research and production of nuclear weapons. Located in southeastern New Mexico, 32 miles east of Carlsbad, the project facilities include disposal rooms excavated in an ancient stable salt formation 2,150 feet underground. Transuranic waste consists of clothing, tools, rags, and other disposable items contaminated with trace amounts of radioactive elements, including plutonium.

Responsible for reviewing and submitting appropriate documentation, identifying hazards, recommending hazard mitigation strategies, preparing and reviewing permits (confined space, hot work, etc.), and determining task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. Ability to develop Job Hazard Analyses and implement the assessments into field activities. Will work to Nuclear Waste Partnership procedures and DOE Orders. Must have a working knowledge of MSHA (30 CFR) and OSHA 29 CFR 1926/1910. Must be able to operate various industrial hygiene monitoring equipment such as, but not limited to, noise meters, photoionization detector (PID), and multi-gas monitors. Excellent verbal and written skills.

Bachelor’s or associates degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or other related degree.
