System One has an immediate need for a Civil Engineering Design Technician in Chattanooga, TN for TVA

In a Transmission Line System Engineering and Design Section, the incumbent provides assistance for engineering and support personnel engaged in the engineering and design of electrical transmission line systems. These systems may be new, rehabilitated, and/or relocated. Work includes assisting in developing and drawing design details to be included on final drawings for electrical transmission line systems.

Working from oral instruction and/or sketches, incumbent will prepare assembly drawings, transmission line component drawings or final working drawings. Incumbent must stay familiar with various components of hardware, insulators and structures in order to accurately prepare drawings to support construction of the transmission lines. New drawings will be prepared in the AutoCAD system and existing drawings may be revised by conventional drafting methods.

Incumbent will prepare or revise plan and profile drawings for new transmission line projects or line modification projects, under the supervision of engineering personnel. Other transmission line drawings to be prepared by incumbent will include structure lists, phasing diagrams, data sheets and specification diagrams. Drawings will be created primarily by AutoCAD.

Incumbent will be required to perform tasks related to issuing project drawings for transmission line construction forces, will help to maintain department record drawings, and will assist in preparing and issuing transmission line drawings requested by various customers. Incumbent will be required to occasionally interpret field survey data, to make necessary calculations and as directed, to add pertinent data to existing transmission line drawings during line uprate projects.

KNOWLEDGE:
-Basic understanding of Civil Engineering principles, and their relationship to transmission line system design, including surveying and structural design.
-Knowledge of various reference resources such as TVA specification and engineering textbooks.
-Working knowledge of mathematics, primarily geometry and trigonometry.
-Knowledge of TVA design practices, standards and techniques.
-Knowledge of AutoCAD drafting techniques.

SKILL:
-Ability to select appropriate reference material for job requirements and be able to recognize deviations from design standards and to adapt to required standards.
-Ability to work with other designers and design sections for completion of total systems of transmission
lines.
-Ability to perform standard calculations related to design of transmission lines.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK:
Using general guidelines or oral instructions from engineers or unit leader must determine the most appropriate and effective options to achieve the design requirements for overhead transmission line systems. Must be able to recognize deviations from normal practices and coordinate changes with design unit leader or engineering units.

Incumbent works under the direct supervision of a Unit leader. Unit leader provides guidance and outlines work to be accomplished. Schedule requirements are outlined. Work is checked for accuracy before being released to construction.

Generally contact is made daily with the Unit leader and contact is made with section engineers on a daily or weekly basis.

Supervisory Controls:
Incumbent normally works under the direct supervision of a Unit leader; however, may work directly under a project engineer. Unit leader outlines work, dictates priorities and establishes deadlines. Work is checked for accuracy by a high grade before being released for construction.

Impact of Work:
Errors are detected during checking or during technical and supervisory reviews. Frequent errors result in a loss of time and an increase in design costs.
