Engineering Specialist (Fire)
$40 - $68hr
Ability to prepare Transitional Fire Hazards Analysis and Fire Hazards Analysis in accordance with DOE Order 420.1C, Facility
Safety
Knowledge of DOE Fire Protection Orders and Standards
Knowledge of fire water systems and construction experience preferred
D&D experience preferred
Perform field verifications and walk downs of fire protection related equipment
Meets the definition of Qualified Fire Protection Engineer in accordance with DOE
Meets the requirements for Professional Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers
Education: Bachelorís Degree in engineering, architecture or
science or equivalent education, specific training, or experience
in area of expertise, as approved by the pertinent Discipline
Chief.
Experience: 10+ years discipline experience in the area of
expertise
Level Specific Responsibilities:
May assist other technical personnel in setting work
priorities.
Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases
of scientific work, usually in one discipline, in a project or
staff group.
Performs work that involves conventional scientific
practice but may include complex features such as
resolving conflicting project requirements, unsuitability of
approaches, and/or difficult coordination requirements.
Plans, coordinates or prepares equipment or work
specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations
for equipment or programs.
Coordinates specialist efforts in assigned areas between
specialty and other specialty groups or disciplines, the
client, suppliers, contractors, and divisional groups.
When delegated, assumes a lead technical role over other
scientists for specific tasks or project sub-groups.
Assist in on-the-job training of assigned personnel and
provides input for their performance evaluations.
Prepares letters to vendors and clients.
Conducts bid analyses and makes recommendations.
Prepares or assists in preparation of studies, designs,
reports or proposals.
Reviews project controls, cost estimates, and manpower
requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
Reviews and checks work of subordinate specialists.
Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based

The Specialists Job Family is responsible for performing complex technical assignments within the
approved engineering schedules and budgets, under supervision of the pertinent Engineering, Architecture, or Scientific
Supervising Personnel. Specialists coordinate technical and administrative activities in their area of expertise with those
of other disciplines and other departments in the company participating in the project

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Keeps Management advised as to status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays and adverse
problems.
Provides technical assistance and guidance to assigned engineers, architects, scientists, specialists,
designers and technicians.
Assists in the training and evaluation of assigned technical personnel.
Continually upgrades his/her technical knowledge and capabilities.
Assures quality, quantity, and completeness of assigned tasks.
Plans and schedules discipline efforts associated with assignment(s).
Assures the timeliness and accuracy of oral and written technical reports on assigned discipline
activities.
Maintains proper engineering, architectural, or scientific files and records.
Performs a variety of other discipline related work, as required
Serves as consultant to engineering management, providing advice and counsel on special engineering assignments.
Assists in new business efforts involving specialized engineering applications. Develops preliminary cost estimates
and participates in proposal preparation and presentation.
Prepares and reviews project controls, cost estimates, and staffing requirements for projects, forecasts and change
orders.
Provides technical direction and assigns work to subordinate engineers and others who assist on specific assignments.
Reviews and checks work.
Coordinates and monitors the work of unique field engineering activities and of specialized outside consultants. May
participate in selection of outside consultants.
Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility, new technologies, methods, or materials
Requests assistance from senior Engineers, Architects, or Scientists as necessary to comply with the applicable legal
requirements on practicing discipline related responsibilities

JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and of principles and practices of related technical areas.
Knowledge of current industry or regulatory codes and standards and study criteria pertinent to the particular
engineering discipline.
Skill in oral and written communications
