The Environmental Remediation (ER) Program identifies and remediates environmental hazards associated with past Los Alamos National Laboratory operations and monitors groundwater and surface water to ensure the protection of the environment and the public. Much of ERís work is governed by the Compliance Order on Consent (Consent Order) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyís (EPAís) Individual Permit for Storm Water. The Technical Writer will support the RCRA Remediation and Water Programs to develop letters, plans, reports and other needed documents in preparation for submittal.
This position reports to the RCRA Remediation Director.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
Communicates and collaborates with team members and project staff to plan, develop, and produce high-quality communication products in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Assists with ensuring projects adhere to schedules and deadlines; works simultaneously on multiple projects, following set work priorities to meet changing deadlines and scope-of-work definitions.
With assistance performs mechanical and substantive edits, correcting grammar, technical usage, content, and organizational problems.
Assists with proofreading, grammar, and full edits on technical, general-audience, and administrative documents; may rewrite or produce original writing.
Assists managers in preparing presentations and talking points for meetings.
Prints, assembles, and prepares documents as requested.
Uses N3B templates and style sheets to ensure product consistency and quality; tailors and improves templates and style sheets to fit project needs; responsible for helping to update and maintain team templates, checklists, and guidelines.
Maintains ER electronic drafts, reviews, finals, and archived files; organizes and retrieves archived files.
Coordinates and tracks document submittals to Regulatory Documentation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
Knowledge of principles, concepts, and techniques in technical writing and editing, composition, and document production.
Basic knowledge of and experience in technical editing, including correcting grammar, usage, style, content, and organizational problems; experience editing technical documents as well as other high-quality communication materials.
Basic knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining schedules; communicating and collaborating with project team members to plan, develop, and produce high-quality communication products; and transmitting, organizing, maintaining, archiving, and retrieving project files.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal; communicates clearly and professionally via phone, email, and in person with multiple team members on multiple projects.
Uses knowledge, experience, and judgment to solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products.
Can be viewed as a capable independent contributor and is also effective and flexible in a team environment.
Is detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and organized; takes initiative and has proven ability to multitask, trouble-shoot, and follow projects to completion.
Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability, and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
Good skills with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelorsí degree combined with some relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the positionís duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.
Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.
