Job Description
ASSESSES THE CONDITION OF BOILERS AND AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT DURING SCHEDULED AND UNSCHEDULED OUTAGES. DETERMINES THE APPLICABLE FAILURE MECHANISM, THE DEGREE OF DAMAGE OR AND RECOMMENDING CORRECTION TO PREVENT RECURRENCE OF FAILURES AND/OR DAMAGE. PERFORMS NDE, COLLECTS AND ANALYZES INSPECTION DATA, CALCULATES BOILER TUBE WASTAGE RATES, DEVELOPS SPREADSHEETS FROM UT DATA, PRODUCES CAD DRAWINGS THAT EXPLAIN AREAS OF DAMAGE OR FAILURE POTENTIAL FOR FUTURE DAMAGE, BOILER TUBE WASTAGE RATES, PATTERNS. RESPONSIBLE FOR REVISING BOILER TUBE MATERIAL CHANGES USING CAD. ESTIMATES DEVELOPED LENGTHS FOR REPLACEMENT BOILER COMPONENTS. ASSIST PLANTS AND SYSTEM ENGINEERS IN PLANNING O&M AND CAPITAL BOILER WORK. PREPARES INSPECTION WORK SCOPES BASED ON GATHERING DATA FROM HISTORICAL RECORDS, BOILER TUBE FAILURE DATA BASE FILES, DRAWINGS, AND BOILER OEM MANUALS. PARTICIPATES IN OUTAGE PLANNING MEETINGS WITH THE PLANT/PARTNER. WRITES INTERIM AND FINAL OUTAGE REPORTS UTILIZING WORD PROCESSING, SPREADSHEETS, AND COMPUTER-AIDED DRAWINGS. ASSISTS OTHER BOILER INSPECTORS AND ENGINEERS IN PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS TASKS INCLUDING INSPECTION SUPPORT. MAY BE REQUIRED TO FUNCTION IN THE CAPACITY AS LEAD INSPECTORS FOR AN OUTAGE AND WILL DIRECT OTHER INSPECTORS AND CRAFTSMEN. MAY FUNCTION AS SOURCE INSPECTOR AT FABRICATION FACILITIES. Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements
High school diploma is required; additional technical education is desirable. Inspectors are required to have a technical understanding and inspection experience with the following equipment: natural circulation, once-through and supercritical boilers; regenerative and tubular air pre-heaters; short and long retracting soot blowers; pulverizers; large fans; air-gas ducts. Must have several years experience as a boilermaker and must be certified tube welder. Boilermaker apprentice training is desirable. Must have successfully completed TVA’s Boiler Inspection Training and the EPRI Boiler Tube Failure Mechanism Training. Certification as Level II NDE technician in PT, MT, RT and VT is desirable. Certification to operate and analyze ultrasonic data from Krauthramer-Bransen programmable UT instrument, Testpro, STATS, TesTex T-2000 is highly desirable. Functional computer skill required include; word processing, spreadsheets, and CAD. Must be physically capable of working independently in dark, confined space, fly ash / coal dust laden atmosphere, from suspended personnel lifting devices or scaffolds. Must be able to climb, crawl, and work off suspended personnel lift devices. Must be able to work under conditions requiring respirator.
