A Research Operation Technician III, under general supervision and/or using procedures/work instructions, safely operates and maintains one or more experimental Research & Development systems. Work involves operations and preventive and corrective maintenance.
Job Duties
Operating R&D projects according to test plans provided by researchers to obtain experimental results.
Acquire electronic data from experimental testing and provide it to researchers.
Write project reports and assist in modifying Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS).
Observing and interpreting readings of instrumentation with local or remote (HMI) readout to keep parameters within acceptable ranges.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot unique research and analytical equipment such as mass spectrometers and gas chromatographs.
Complete unique project training to satisfy operational/test requirements.
Recording in logs various aspects of the system's operation.
Working from engineered drawings to modify project equipment or systems.
Performs functional testing of equipment and systems to determine readiness.
Troubleshoot and correct equipment or system malfunctions, perform repair on equipment such as valves, pumps, and heaters.
Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution of a routine nature.
Select and order materials for routine work.
Identify the need for repair and maintenance work and initiate work orders.
Provides instruction, training, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to equal or lower-level technicians performing similar work.
Keeps the general project area and equipment in good working order.
Reviewing and implementing Lock-out Tag-out (LOTO) plans to ensure work is performed safely.
Operate forklifts and manlifts.
Research Operation Technician III, under general supervision, may perform minor tasks as needed, including, but not limited to:
Performing administrative and other support duties.
Maintaining facilities in clean, safe and orderly condition.
Organizing interior and exterior of shop and other maintenance facilities.
Other duties as assigned to ensure timely project execution.
Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
A High School diploma or GED is required.
Minimum of 3 years of job-related experience is required.
A pleasant demeanor with the ability to calmly assess and respond to stressful situations.
A basic knowledge of measurement and test equipment (M&TE).
Knowledgeable of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and other project design documents.
Basic understanding of process and experimental equipment along with fluid/hydraulic and mechanical systems.
Possess good eyesight and hearing to be able to identify operational problems.
Good written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail are required.
Basic knowledge of computer systems and software programs to be able to provide the researchers data, perform other work assignments and administrative duties such as Email.
Ability to learn and perform basic programming of single loop controllers, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), data acquisition systems or Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) such as Factory Talk or Wonderware.
Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements:
High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET with at least ten (10) years of job-related experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least eight (8) years of job-related experience.
Specific training and thorough knowledge in a specific R&D area.
Knowledge of Swagelok fractional tubing and tubing components such as valves, regulators, and gauges.
Able to understand, set up, and perform pneumatic and hydrostatic pressure testing.
Basic understanding of electronics, electrical circuitry, and signal processing.
Overhaul or repair equipment and valves, then functionally test to ensure proper operation.
Excellent communication skills.
Enhanced computer skills, able to use Word and Excel to mine data, write reports, etc.
Broad knowledge of other disciplines such as general math, geometry, electronics, etc.

Work Environment
Majority of the workday is in a variety of environments including outdoors lab/research areas and inside administrative areas. Assists in performing maintenance, housekeeping, or administrative duties in a typical shop environment where certain hazards do exist.
Physical and Mental Demands
Entry into confined spaces is required.
Lifting of up to 50 pounds is required.
Kneeling, standing, and walking, and use of speech/hearing abilities for communications, constant mental alertness, and must be able to work according to schedule.
Hours of Work
This is typically a 4 workday 10-hour daylight schedule but can also be a 5 workday 8-hour daylight schedule based on project run schedules and associated preparation requirements. Occasional overtime may be required based on client need.
