2.0 Scope
An appropriately qualified analytical chemist will provide technical expertise in the following critical areas: prepare samples, characterize and analyze various substances from R&D and a scale‐up process for production of advanced materials.
3.0 Objectives
An appropriately qualified analytical chemist will provide technical expertise in the following critical areas: prepare samples, characterize and analyze various substances from R&D and a scale‐up process for production of advanced materials.
2.0 Tasks and Delivery (Job Description)
1. Conduct complex, multi-instrument analysis on various materials for electrochemical energy storage, nanomaterials, catalysts and other materials as needed. Samples must be analyzed in a timely manner and results reported back to allow for process improvements. This task will be conducted daily.

2. Troubleshoot and conduct routine maintenance of analytical instruments. Instruments must be calibrated as needed. Schedule manufacturer’s technical support for annual preventative maintenance. Write safety plan for work.

3. Train users for selected instruments. They must be trained to the correct operation of the instrument and monitored to insure proper procedures are followed. Keep instrument usage logs.

4. Write and periodically update SOP’s and safety documentation for instrument operation. The documents will be updated on an annual basis or sooner if new protocols or sample materials are introduced. This task will be conducted as needed or annually.

3.0 Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
An expert level skills is required in the following categories: analytical techniques including ICP-MS, ICP-OES, XRD, TGA/DSC, SEM-EDS, ion beam mill and microwave sample digester.
The individual must have 10+ years’ experience with operating and maintaining modern analytical and materials characterization equipment typically found in laboratories conducting research in chemical synthesis. Good oral and written communication skills are necessary as well as the basic ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel for communications, data analysis, and tracking.

5.0 Work Schedule

Contract employees are expected to work a standard 40-hour week. However, the programmatic needs of individual research groups mandate that completion of the scheduled experiments has the highest priority. It is sometimes impossible to complete scheduled experiments in a normal workday (8 hours). Contract employees may be required to work overtime or on a weekend. Supervisors for individual research projects will determine individual work schedules.
