Safety Specialist
San Juan Construction, Inc., recognized by Engineering News Record as one of the 'Top 50 Contractors Working Abroad', is a multi-disciplined construction company with an extensive resume and over 20 years’ experience managing commercial and government construction projects throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, Pacific and Indian Ocean locations.
Primary Location
Kwajalein Atoll located in the Marshall Islands
Start date: ASAP
Duration 1-year contract with possible extension
Rotation 4 months on and 2 weeks off.
Tax free status after 330 days
Bonuses/Company pays for housing and food.
50hr + work weeks.
Current US Passport preferred.
We are seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) for a US Army Corps of Engineers project in the Marshall Islands.
Responsible for overall management of the safety and occupational health program on the project. The Site Safety and Health Officer shall have the authority to act in all safety matters for the project at all times, to perform safety and occupational health management, surveillance, inspections, and safety enforcement. Perform all work in a safe and professional manner.
The SSHO shall meet the following qualifications:
Be a certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with experience with hazardous waste sites.
A minimum of 5 years of continuous construction industry experience in implementing safety and health programs.
A minimum of 3 years’ experience in developing and implementing safety and health programs at hazardous waste sites, or at underground or aboveground storage tank removal projects.
b. Documented experience in supervising professional and technician level personnel.
c. Documented experience in developing worker exposure assessment programs and air monitoring programs and techniques.
d. Documented experience in managing personal protective equipment programs and conducting PPE hazard evaluations for the types of activities and hazards likely to be encountered on the project.
e. Working knowledge of USAKA and Federal occupational safety and health regulations.
Documented experience in construction techniques/safety procedures preferably in the heavy/civil construction field with an emphasis on fall protection programs.
Working knowledge of OSHA and USACE safety and health regulations.
Specific training in respiratory protective equipment, confined space entry and in the development and implementation of fall protection programs.
An average of at least 8 hours of documented continuing education formal safety training each year for the past 5 years and the 30 hour OSHA Construction card.
Ability to provide leadership in establishing and sustaining a safe work place by effective interaction with internal and external clients
Ensure compliance with the project Accident Prevention Plan
Prepare Activity Hazard Analysis for each definable feature of work on the project
Ensure personal protective equipment meets applicable OSHA/EPA requirements and employees are trained on proper use
Safety training of all personnel assigned to project and project site visitors
Conducts project safety inspections with follow-up inspections of any open items
Subcontractor qualification and training
Regulatory compliance with OSHA and USACE standards
Accident and Incident investigations
Development and Implementation of Corrective Action Plans
Works with project supervision to create safety solutions to safety problems
Fosters and maintains a positive safety culture for the project personnel
Maintains all safety certifications as required by contract
Attends and participate in all preparatory and initial quality control phase meetings
Conduct weekly safety meetings for all workers
Produce a Daily Safety Report of activities performed
Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to get along with customers, co-workers, supervisors, and management.

Job Requirements:
Should have the 40 hour EM 385 course, 40hr HAZWOPER with 8 hour annual refreshers, and Competent Person certificates for confined space entry, fall protection, excavation, and scaffolding.
